How to Make a Simple Healing Plantain Salve For Burns, Bites, Eczema & More

Most people consider plantain to be a common weed, but this herb is actually used as a healing plant in numerous cultures.

There are two varieties of plantain: Plantago major, also called broadleaf, and Plantago lanceolata, known as narrowleaf.

This weed is highly versatile and beneficial. It can be eaten, steeped into tea and made into poultices and salves, using leaves, roots, seeds and flower spikes.

Here are some of the medicinal properties of plantain:

  • anti-inflammatory
  • antimicrobial
  • antiviral
  • expectorant actions
  • anti-toxic
  • antihemorrhagic
  • emollient
  • cooling
  • vulnerary (heals wounds)
  • diuretic
  • lungs/respiratory
  • demulcent

This herb is rich in nutrients, such as vitamins A, C, K, and calcium, as well as numerous medicinal chemical compounds, including apigenin, allantoin (wound healing and cell rejuvenation), sorbitol, tannin, aucubin  (powerful anti-toxin), baicalein, linoleic acid, and oleanolic acid.

A natural plantain salve made at home is an excellent remedy for minor cuts and burns.

Moreover, this mixture heals chapped hands and sunburns and soothes eczema, psoriasis, bee and wasp stings, mosquito bites, poison ivy, and diaper rash.

Here is how to make it:

Ingredients:

  • A handful of Plantain leaves (washed and dried)
  • 4 oz Coconut Oil
  • ½ oz Beeswax (pellets or shaved)

Instructions:

Tear the plantain leaves into smaller pieces, and place them in an 8 oz heatproof jar.

Add the coconut oil over the leaves, put the jar in a saucepan, and fill the pan about halfway up the jar with water.

Leave to simmer over low heat, and leave the oil to infuse for about 2 hours.

Afterward, strain out the plantain leaves, and the oil should get a light green color. Add the beeswax, and put the jar back in the saucepan to melt it.

Next, just pour the salve into smaller jars or tins, and leave it to cool.

Then, you can use the salve to accelerate the healing of all the health issues mentioned above.
